Next Guildford Community Lottery draw on Sat 26 January at 8PM
The draw is in 6 days 3 hours 54 minutes
The Scorchers Basketball Foundation has the main aim of growing inclusive basketball participation across Surrey.
The Foundation runs projects for the disadvantaged and disabled in Surrey, bringing people together and improving lives through basketball. We work with many schools, charities, youth organisations, and the local police.
In 2017 we were very proud to win the Guildford Borough Council Mayor's Award for Access, Access through Sport for our work with Learning Disability young people.
The Foundation are keen to address the issues of obesity in children, get the inactive, active and give deprived children the chance to take part in this inclusive sport. When we look at the Hidden Surrey report, there are pockets of deprivation in Surrey that are masked by the overall more wealthy segments. Consequently school children in these areas can miss out on some of the opportunities that are available in other more obviously poor regions of England because there is a belief that help is not needed here.
Basketball has greater success in deprived areas because it has huge street credibility as many of the top players are from similar backgrounds. This is why we use the Surrey Scorchers professional basketball players to coach the basketball. They are such great role models for the children. As stated in the Surrey Youth Focus study, Engaging underrepresented young people in physical activity, “Young people are motivated by inspirational stories”
We need your help please so we can establish more basketball sessions across the area and reach as many disabled and disadvantaged adults and children as we can.
Thank you for supporting Scorchers Basketball Foundation.
